Guadalajara — Mexico's second city and the birthplace of mariachi, tequila, and the torta ahogada — is a confident, culturally rich destination that rewards visitors who venture beyond the UNESCO-listed historic core. Matches are hosted at Estadio Akron in Zapopan, about 20 minutes northwest of the city center. The city's food scene is anchored by slow-braised meats, dried-chile sauces, and a craft-food revival in Colonia Americana that has attracted international attention.

Where to Stay

Colonia Americana

Trendy, walkable, Guadalajara's best independent restaurant and bar strip

Avenida Chapultepec runs through the heart of it — the closest thing GDL has to Roma Norte, with boutique hotels, cocktail bars, and a dozen serious restaurants within a few blocks.

Centro Histórico

Colonial grandeur, cathedral, markets, mariachi plazas

Hospicio Cabañas, the cathedral, Teatro Degollado, and Palacio de Gobierno are all walkable — ideal for first-timers who want to anchor their visit in history.

Tlaquepaque

Artisan village, ceramics, blown glass, mariachi cantinas

Technically a separate municipality but a 20-minute Uber south — cobblestone streets, the El Parián cantina courtyard, and Mexico's premier craft market make it the best half-day trip.

📍 Colonia Americana

Chef Francisco Ruano's flagship has been on the 50 Best Discovery list since 2013; the menu mines Jalisco's native larder with technique — one of the most serious kitchens in western Mexico.

📍 Colonia Americana (Calle Argentina)

Eight- and twelve-course menus in an intimate converted mansion; Lula is where Guadalajara's food community celebrates — book ahead, as it's small and demand exceeds supply.

📍 Centro / Las Nueve Esquinas

Institution-level birria in the charming nine-alley square near the centro — the broth is complex and chile-forward, and the setting (a restored colonial courtyard) matches the food.

📍 Centro Histórico

Multi-generational family restaurant that has fed tapatíos and visitors since 1942 — generous portions of birria, carne en su jugo, and pozole in a room where the walls tell the city's culinary story.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Hospicio Cabañas

UNESCO World Heritage Site

José Clemente Orozco's ceiling mural 'El hombre de fuego' (The Man of Fire) in the central chapel is considered Mexico's finest 20th-century mural — a peer to the Sistine ceiling in scale of ambition.

Historic architecture / public plaza

Guadalajara Cathedral & Plaza Tapatía

Historic architecture / public plaza

The twin-spired cathedral dominates the city's skyline and the surrounding plaza complex — Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres, Palacio de Gobierno, Teatro Degollado — makes for a dense, walkable historic circuit.

Artisan market town / day trip

Tlaquepaque

Artisan market town / day trip

The most accessible showcase of Mexican craft culture — ceramics, blown glass, textiles, and silver — and the El Parián courtyard hosts live mariachi performances that go well past midnight.

Archaeological site

Guachimontones Pyramids (Teuchitlán)

Archaeological site

A UNESCO World Heritage Site about 45 minutes west of the city — unique circular pyramid architecture dating to 200 BCE, far less visited than Teotihuacán and dramatically set against a volcanic lake.

Stadium / architectural landmark

Estadio Akron (Zapopan)

Stadium / architectural landmark

The venue's distinctive volcano-shaped exterior is worth seeing even outside match days — located in Zapopan's Andares district, which has good shopping and restaurants for pre-match exploration.

Local Food to Try

Birria (slow-braised spiced goat or beef; Guadalajara's most iconic dish)Torta ahogada (carnitas-filled birote bread drowned in chile árbol sauce)Carne en su jugo (beef simmered in its own juices with bacon, tomatillo, and beans)Tequila (the town of Tequila is 60 km west — distillery tours are a legitimate day trip)Jericalla (a crème brûlée-like custard dessert native to Guadalajara)

Getting Around

Guadalajara's SITEUR light rail (three lines) covers the central core efficiently and cheaply. Estadio Akron in Zapopan is not directly served by rail — take an Uber (30–40 MXN on a normal day, more on match day); expect surge pricing post-match and plan 45–60 minutes for the return. Uber and Didi work reliably throughout the metro area.

Quick Tips

  • The 'birote salado' bread used in a torta ahogada is specific to Guadalajara's water and climate — a proper torta ahogada outside the city is not the same thing.
  • Currency is MXN; Uber is the safest and most reliable way to move around, including airport pickups — the app works normally from inside the terminal.
  • Altitude is moderate here (1,560 m) — less severe than Mexico City, but still worth staying hydrated on arrival.
  • Mariachi performances are not tourist traps in Guadalajara — they originate here. The Plaza de los Mariachis near the Mercado Libertad is the authentic hub; El Parián in Tlaquepaque is more atmospheric.
  • For match days at Estadio Akron, book Uber in advance or walk to Andares shopping center (10-minute walk) where post-match crowd dispersal is easier.
